Federal Government Should Work for Immediate Ceasefire And lasting peace in Region
Edmonton – Taghreed Saadeh
Alberta Conservative Justice Minister Mickey Amery said, ” One year has passed and the world continues to watch as unspeakable and horrific violence grips the Middle East. I, along with so many of my fellow Canadians, remain deeply concerned by the ongoing bloodshed, and the recent attacks on Lebanon have now displaced millions of civilians there alone. The death of innocent men, women and children and the destruction of critical infrastructure, especially in Gaza and in Beirut, has been heartbreaking. “
He added in a post on his Facebook page, “Let us never forget the tens of thousands of innocent civilians on all sides who have lost their lives over the past year. “
Amery confirmed that reports of islamophobia and antisemitism have risen sharply. ” As Minister of Justice, I stand firmly against hate and violence in any form in this province and we are working diligently to support Albertans impacted by these hateful actions. “
He added that many Albertans have close connections to this conflict and have been anxiously waiting for leadership from our foreign affairs and immigration ministers, as these offices are directly responsible and hold significant influence in this regard.
“Since the beginning of the invasion into Lebanon, our office has been trying to obtain information on how Canadians, permanent residents and their direct family members can seek help. We know that the emergency hotlines are not working. We know that embassies are not providing support quickly or effectively enough. We know that thousands of Canadians are stuck abroad without a clear pathway to come home, ” He said.
Amery added, “Canada has a long record of intervening on the side of peace in global conflicts. Several countries have already pledged their support for the delivery of humanitarian aid to impacted populations, and others have intervened to seek an end to the conflict. It is well past time for our federal government to unequivocally use its foreign influence to work for an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.”
Amery addressed the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada Marc Miller saying, “Millions of people on all sides are displaced and countless are at risk of imminent death. Many have already died senselessly. Work with us to develop a plan to help bring our families home.”
