Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed in an investigative report published on Monday that a sniper in the “Nahal” Brigade” of the Israeli occupation army has been killing dozens of Palestinians daily, most of them aid seekers, without facing any direct threat.
The investigation indicated that the sniper targeted civilians near food and water distribution points, deliberately opening fire on them, resulting in a large number of deaths. Soldiers who provided testimonies described the situation as a “daily killing routine” and not an isolated incident, pointing to the lack of clear restrictions on the use of force.
Haaretz noted that the military orders were vague, allowing the sniper to fire without prior warning, and that many of the victims were unarmed civilians seeking essential aid. The investigation added that these practices raise serious questions about the responsibility of the military leadership and the possibility of committing war crimes.
The report also indicated that some soldiers in the Nahal Brigade resorted to evading military service due to the psychological and ethical pressures they faced during operations in Gaza. According to the investigation, soldiers felt a heavy moral burden due to orders that included targeting civilians, which led some of them to leave their positions or request exemption from service.
Cases of evasion affected the morale of military units, prompting interventions from the Israeli military leadership to provide psychological and moral support. The Israeli army opened internal investigations to understand the phenomenon and take measures to limit it, including providing psychological support to affected soldiers.
Human rights activists and Israeli critics of military policies pointed out that these incidents reveal a systematic approach against civilians in conflict areas and called for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible for deliberate killings.
