Under the banner “Hands Off Venezuela,” a rally was held today in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta province, Canada, to protest U.S. military aggression against Venezuela and ongoing attempts to undermine its sovereignty, including what demonstrators describe as efforts to remove or kidnap President Nicolás Maduro.
Protesters carried signs reading “Hands Off Venezuela” and “U.S. Troops Out,” denouncing military intervention and regime-change policies.
They chanted slogans demanding respect for international legitimacy, state sovereignty, and the protection of nations from foreign intervention.
The protest was organized by the Edmonton Committee Against War and Racism, with the participation of the Edmonton Peace Council, the Salvador Allende Foundation, and other concerned members of the public.
Demonstrators gathered at the intersection of Whyte Avenue and 104 Street dawntown Edmonton, calling for an end to foreign intervention, economic sanctions, and regime-change policies against Venezuela.
Tensions between the United States and Venezuela have escalated in recent years following Washington’s refusal to recognize President Nicolás Maduro after his re-election, instead backing opposition figure Juan Guaidó in 2019.
Venezuela has since been subjected to severe economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and repeated threats of regime change. In 2020, a failed mercenary operation known as Operation Gideon which involved foreign contractors and former U.S. military personnel was exposed by Venezuelan authorities and widely reported as an attempted incursion aimed at capturing or removing President Maduro. Although the U.S. government denied direct involvement, the incident intensified international concern over covert actions to destabilize Venezuela and violate its national sovereignty.
