The 77th Emmy Awards in 2025 celebrated the usual glitz, glamour, and star-studded appearances, but this year the spotlight extended beyond fashion and trophies. Several celebrities used the global stage to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
Actress Hannah Einbinder, known for her role in Hacks, wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin while accepting the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress. On stage, she declared:
“Go birds, fuck ICE, and free Palestine.”
Backstage, she emphasized her personal connection to Gaza, sharing that friends working as frontline doctors and educators are providing vital care and schooling under extreme conditions. Einbinder, a signatory of the Film Workers for Palestine pledge, stressed that the boycott targets institutions complicit in the humanitarian crisis, not individuals.
Spanish actor Javier Bardem made headlines by wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh on the red carpet. He told reporters:
“I cannot work with someone who justifies or supports the genocide.”
Bardem reiterated that he would avoid collaborations with companies failing to condemn the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, prioritizing moral responsibility over career opportunities.
Other stars joined the movement: Megan Stalter displayed “ceasefire!” on her purse, while Aimee Lou Wood and Brian Cox wore the Artists4Ceasefire pin. The movement, supported by figures such as Mark Ruffalo, Jessica Chastain, and Joaquin Phoenix, emphasizes nonviolence, empathy, and global awareness.
What was once a sensitive and often avoided subject in Hollywood is now openly discussed. Celebrities are no longer hesitant to name Gaza, call for a ceasefire, and condemn ongoing injustices. Their statements, pins, and symbols reflect solidarity and defiance, challenging an industry that has historically shied away from addressing Palestine.
At the 2025 Emmys, the red carpet became a platform for advocacy. Stars used their moments not only to celebrate art but to demand justice, peace, and human dignity for those enduring hardship in Gaza.
