Ramallah – Zaytoun News
Each year on November 29, the United Nations observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, coinciding with the anniversary of the General Assembly’s 1947 adoption of Partition Resolution 181. This day serves as a global reminder of the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights to self-determination, freedom, and independence.
Over the past two years, the significance of this day has intensified due to the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, following the genocidal war launched by the Israeli occupation army on October 7, 2023. The conflict has resulted in over 160,000 deaths and injuries, most of them women and children, alongside more than 10,000 missing persons, massive infrastructure destruction, and famine that has claimed the lives of countless children and elderly، marking one of the gravest humanitarian crises worldwide.
In response to these massacres, thousands of demonstrations, sit-ins, and solidarity events have been held in streets, city squares, universities, and schools across numerous global capitals. International solidarity has also taken legal and diplomatic forms, including actions against Israeli officials at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, severing of diplomatic ties with Israel, and the recognition of the State of Palestine by multiple countries. These efforts culminated in the ICC issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The International Day of Solidarity features a range of cultural and political activities organized by solidarity movements, Palestinian embassies, and supporters of the Palestinian cause, including: cultural exhibitions and programs، political festivals and mass solidarity gathering، film screenings, lectures, and public meetings، issuance of solidarity messages and media campaigns.
At UN Headquarters in New York, the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People convenes a special session each year, and the UN Division for Palestinian Rights publishes a bulletin documenting statements and messages, as well as organizing additional events in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine.
The day serves as a stark reminder that, despite decades of international attention and numerous UN resolutions, the Palestinian question remains unresolved. The Palestinian people continue to seek the fulfillment of their rights as affirmed by the UN General Assembly: Self-determination free of external interference, establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders. And the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties
Significant milestones include Palestine joining the UN as a non-member observer state on November 29, 2012, and the raising of the Palestinian flag at UN headquarters on September 30, 2015, marking global recognition of the Palestinian people’s enduring struggle for freedom and statehood.
