The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has affirmed the State of Palestine’s solidarity with Canada in the wake of the shooting incident at a school in British Columbia, expressing its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Canada, as well as to the families of the victims, and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
The ministry reiterated its rejection of all forms of violence targeting civilians, particularly in educational institutions, emphasizing the importance of strengthening international efforts to protect students and ensure their safety.
In a tragic incident that shook the town of Tumbler Ridge in northern British Columbia, ten people, including the suspected shooter, were killed in a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, marking one of the deadliest school shootings in Canada’s recent history. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported receiving a call about an “active shooter” at the school around 1:20 p.m., and upon arrival, officers found several victims inside the building, including the suspect, who was found deceased from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Several others were seriously injured, while approximately 25 people received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, with some being airlifted to larger hospitals. An emergency alert had been issued, advising residents to shelter in place, and was later lifted after authorities confirmed that there was no ongoing threat.
Tumbler Ridge, a small town with a population of less than 2,500, was left in shock. The secondary school serves approximately 175 students from grades 7 to 12. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as “deeply shocking” and expressed his profound sorrow, while British Columbia Premier David Eby called it “an unimaginable tragedy,” confirming that investigations into the motives and circumstances are ongoing. Carney also announced that flags would be lowered to half-mast and that support would be provided to local teams and affected families.
At this time, the police have not disclosed a clear motive for the shooting and have refrained from revealing the identities of the victims or the suspect to protect the families’ privacy, while investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances of the incident and provide support to the local community and affected families.
