The Swedish Left Party on Monday undertook a symbolic action in parliament, involving all 22 of its members and two Left members of the European Parliament, to underscore the suffering of Palestinian detainees and elevate their issue within Europe’s legislative forums.
The MPs placed photos of 24 Palestinian detainees, including leader Marwan Barghouti, on their seats in parliament for a two-week period, while sharing information on detention conditions across social media platforms, to raise European awareness of the humanitarian issue.
Each MP also wrote a personal message of solidarity to a detainee, which was delivered through the International Committee of the Red Cross and the lawyer of the Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs Commission.
Party leaders participated in the initiative, headed by Nooshi Dadgostar, affirming the party’s commitment to supporting Palestinian rights, foremost the right of detainees to freedom and human dignity.
The initiative is part of joint coordination between the Swedish Left Party, the General Union of the Palestinian Community in Sweden, the Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs, and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS), in a move aimed at internationalizing the detainees’ issue and elevating it on the global stage.
The union and the Palestinian community voiced appreciation for the supportive stances of Swedish and European parliamentarians, reaffirming their commitment to sustain efforts until detainees secure their full freedom.
