The Palestinian Ministry of Culture announced that the feature film Palestine 36 will be part of the global virtual event organized by the United Nations Film Club on Saturday, November 29, 2025, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The screening comes in celebration of the film, which has been selected by the Ministry as Palestine’s official submission for the 2026 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
The Ministry explained that the event will include opening remarks by Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, in addition to an exclusive interview with the film’s director, Annemarie Jacir.
Palestinian Minister of Culture Imad Hamdan stated that “Palestine 36” represents a major contribution to Palestinian cinema. The film explores a pivotal chapter in Palestinian history, portraying the 1936–1939 uprising against British colonial rule, which laid the foundations for the events leading up to the 1948 Nakba and its lasting impact. By revisiting the roots and consequences of the Nakba, an issue that has remained central to the United Nations for nearly eight decades, the film offers a refined artistic vision and a deep cinematic reading that contributes to global awareness of the Palestinian cause.
Hamdan added that the film features a distinguished cast of international stars, including Oscar-winning British actor Jeremy Irons, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, and Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass, who has been nominated for an Emmy Award. “Palestine 36” marks Jacir’s fourth consecutive film to be selected as Palestine’s official Oscar submission, underscoring the growing presence of Palestinian cinema on the world stage.
He also encouraged audiences and cinema lovers to follow the event through the United Nations’ global platforms, including UN Web TV and the UN’s official YouTube channel.
