The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned today that time is running out for the Israeli ban on the agency to come into effect, which will prevent it from providing its services to millions of Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
This was stated by UNRWA’s Director of Communications and Media, Juliette Touma, in an interview with Radio and Television Ireland (RTE), the content of which was transmitted by the agency on its account via X.
The UN warning comes less than a month before, specifically at the end of January, the occupation’s decision to ban UNRWA from operating in areas under its control comes into effect, after the Knesset voted on the decision last October.
The UN official said, “Time is running out for a possible ban on the agency, which will prevent it from providing its basic services to millions of Palestinian refugees in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.”
Touma stressed that “the United Nations does not plan to replace the agency in the Palestinian territories, and the Knesset must reverse its decision to ban it.”
On October 28, the Israeli Knesset finally approved the ban on UNRWA activities in the occupied Palestinian territories. The decision will enter into force 3 months after the vote, i.e. the end of January 2025.
