Over 150 Writers Boycott The New York Times Over Alleged Bias in Gaza Coverage

Washington – Zaytoun News

More than 150 writers, intellectuals, and public figures have announced that they will no longer contribute to the opinion section of The New York Times in protest against what they describe as biased coverage of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, particularly the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. This step is considered a collective call to hold accountable a major media institution regarded as a leading platform in American journalism, with substantial influence over Western public opinion regarding the Middle East.

The signatories argue that Western media coverage, especially in major U.S. newspapers, tends to portray the Israeli side in more detail and with greater humanity than the Palestinian perspective. They also contend that the language and editorial choices used in reporting often downplay Palestinian suffering or frame it as a reaction to Israeli actions rather than recognizing it as part of the reality of occupation and aggression. The signatories emphasize that, given the weight and credibility of the newspaper, it has the power to shape public opinion, making it imperative to hold it accountable.

The open letter to the newspaper contained three explicit demands. First, a comprehensive review of editorial practices concerning coverage of Israel and Palestine, including the establishment of new editorial standards regarding language, sources, and balance in selection. Second, the withdrawal or review of a specific investigative article cited by the campaign as methodologically flawed. Third, that the editorial board issue a public statement calling for a halt to U.S. arms exports to Israel or the limitation of military support, as part of the ethical responsibility of major journalism.

Among the most prominent signatories are Irish author Sally Rooney, global climate activist Greta Thunberg, U.S. Congresswoman of Palestinian descent Rashida Tlaib, writer and academic Viet Thanh Nguyen, poet Rupi Kaur, and Palestinian-European parliamentarian Rima Hassan. The list also includes dozens of writers and intellectuals who have previously published in the newspaper, reflecting widespread frustration within the cultural and intellectual community over what they see as editorial bias.

This campaign signals a shift toward media boycotts as a form of cultural and intellectual pressure, rather than solely protesting through individual articles or statements. It also reflects growing awareness within the cultural sphere of the relationship between media and power, especially regarding Middle Eastern issues and media justice. The campaign serves as a reminder that well-established media institutions can face criticism from within the cultural community itself, not just from external voices, potentially opening the door to reconsideration of editorial standards and the balance of media representation for Palestinian issues in the future.
