Gaza’s 700-Day Nightmare: Systematic Devastation and Mass Displacement

By Taghreed Saadeh

The Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has entered its 700th consecutive day since October 7, 2023, leaving a horrifying toll that confirms what is taking place is a systematic genocide and ethnic cleansing targeting over 2.4 million residents in the Gaza Strip.

According to a statement from the Government Media Office in Gaza – Hamas – published in media, Israel has caused the destruction of nearly 90% of Gaza, with preliminary losses exceeding $68 billion, following the dropping of over 150,000 tons of explosives and the occupation of more than 80% of the territory. Even areas deemed “humanitarian safe zones” by Israel, such as Al-Mawasi, were struck 109 times.

The statement reported a total of 73,731 people killed or missing, including 64,300 martyrs who reached hospitals, and 9,500 missing. Children were the most affected, with over 20,000 killed, including 1,009 under the age of one and 450 infants born and killed during the war. Among the deceased, 12,500 were women, including 8,990 mothers, and 22,404 were fathers.

Civilians and professional staff were directly targeted: 1,670 medical personnel, 139 civil defense workers, 248 journalists, 173 municipal employees (including 4 mayors), 780 security officers, and 860 athletes were killed.

Over 39,000 families suffered massacres, with 2,700 families completely wiped out, resulting in 8,563 martyrs, and 6,020 families partially destroyed, leaving only one survivor, accounting for 12,911 martyrs.

Since the beginning of the war, 162,005 injured were admitted to hospitals, including 19,000 requiring long-term rehabilitation, over 4,800 amputations (18% children), 1,200 cases of paralysis, and 1,200 cases of vision loss.

6,691 civilians have been detained, including 362 medical staff, 48 journalists, and 26 civil defense members. The war left 21,182 widows and 56,320 orphans. Over 2.14 million displaced suffered from various contagious diseases, and 71,338 contracted hepatitis.

Israel destroyed 38 hospitals and 96 health centers, targeted 197 ambulances, and conducted 788 attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel. Additionally, 61 civil defense and rescue vehicles were destroyed.

95% of schools in Gaza were damaged, 90% of school buildings require complete reconstruction. 662 schools were directly destroyed, 163 institutions completely demolished, and 388 partially damaged, depriving 785,000 students of education. Over 13,500 students and 830 teachers were killed, including 193 academics and researchers.

Israel destroyed 833 mosques completely, 180 partially, 3 churches, and 40 of 60 cemeteries. Over 2,450 martyrs’ bodies were taken, and 7 mass graves were established in hospitals, where 529 martyrs were exhumed.

268,000 housing units were completely destroyed, 148,000 severely damaged, and 153,000 partially damaged, displacing over 288,000 families. Over 125,000 out of 135,000 shelters for displaced persons were affected, with nearly 2 million Palestinians forced into displacement.

Israel fully closed crossings for 186 days, preventing 111,600 aid trucks from entering. 46 soup kitchens and 61 aid distribution centers were targeted, and 67 aid workers were killed. Aid convoys were attacked 128 times, resulting in 2,362 martyrs and 17,434 injuries in “death traps,” with over 200 missing. 650,000 children face malnutrition, including 40,000 infants in urgent need of 250,000 monthly milk cartons blocked by the occupation.

22,000 patients require treatment abroad, including 5,200 children urgently. 17,000 patients await travel approval, including 12,500 cancer patients and 350,000 chronically ill. 107,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women face life-threatening conditions due to lack of care.

Israel destroyed 725 central water wells, 134 fresh water projects, resulting in over 9,400 deaths, mostly children. 5,080 km of electricity networks, 2,285 transformers, and 235,000 electricity meters were destroyed, cutting off over 2.123 billion kWh from Gaza.

Direct losses in agriculture reached $2.8 billion. 94% of agricultural lands were destroyed (out of 178,000 dunams), along with 1,223 irrigation wells and 665 farms. Vegetable cultivation dropped from 93,000 dunams to only 4,000 dunams, and annual production fell from 405,000 tons to 28,000 tons. Fisheries were completely destroyed due to targeted fishing zones.

The Government Media Office in Gaza emphasized that these figures reflect an unprecedented tragedy in Gaza and urged the international community to fulfill its legal, moral, and humanitarian responsibilities by taking immediate action to stop the genocide and save the lives of over 2.4 million Palestinians facing daily threats of death.
