Sources close to Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, who is currently held in Israeli prisons, told “Zaytoun News” that his wife, lawyer Fadwa Barghouti, left the Palestinian territories yesterday for Cairo. She aims to be near indirect negotiations conducted by Hamas with Israel to secure the release of several Israeli prisoners in its custody, including Barghouti.
The sources indicated that Hamas insists on including Barghouti’s name on the list of prisoners slated for release in a swap deal, which would involve inmates serving life sentences and other long-term sentences.
They confirmed that Barghouti would accept exile if offered in exchange for his release, considering this step as potentially the last hope for achieving a new prisoner swap.
The proposed list also includes other Palestinian prisoners serving long-term sentences alongside Barghouti, among them Ahmed Sa’adat, the Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Barghouti was arrested in 2002 during the Second Intifada and was sentenced to five life sentences plus fifty years for multiple charges, including murder, incitement to violence, and planning attacks against Israelis.
He is currently serving his sentence in Israel’s high-security Gilboa Prison, which houses Palestinian prisoners serving long-term and life sentences.
