The West, Democracy, and the Palestinian Cause

By Taghreed Saadeh

In the West, politics shapes far more than government policy. Art, cinema, media, and academic institutions are all influenced, to varying degrees, by political interests and power dynamics. For those of us living in Western societies, the gap between democratic ideals and their practical application is increasingly difficult to ignore.

Democracy is measured not only by elections and freedom of expression, but also by whether people can exercise these rights without fear of professional or social consequences. The war on Gaza has exposed this contradiction, with students, academics, and employees in Canada facing pressure and disciplinary action over their views on Palestine, raising serious concerns about free expression and institutional independence.

Despite widespread public demonstrations calling for an end to the war and the protection of Palestinian civilians, Western governments have continued various forms of political and military support for Israel. This disconnect highlights how strategic interests and political alliances can take precedence over democratic principles, particularly when Palestine is concerned.

Media coverage has also reflected these power imbalances, often giving greater prominence to the Israeli narrative. Yet social media and firsthand accounts have challenged this dominance, bringing Palestinian experiences and suffering to a global audience.

To suggest that Palestinians and Arabs have failed to promote their cause ignores decades of political, media, human rights, and community activism in Canada and the United States, dating back to before Israel’s establishment in 1948. The challenge has never simply been making the Palestinian voice heard، it has been translating public awareness into meaningful political change.

Arab community organizations have played an essential role in preserving cultural identity and providing vital services. However, community engagement does not automatically translate into political influence, which requires sustained advocacy, resources, strategic organization, and access to decision-makers. Political pressures may also discourage some organizations from directly addressing sensitive issues.

The same contradictions extend to cinema and cultural institutions. Artistic recognition can bring visibility to Palestinian stories, but visibility alone does not guarantee political change. Institutions may celebrate justice and human rights while the policies of the countries in which they operate continue to contradict those values.

This does not diminish the genuine solidarity shown by many Western individuals and organizations. Rather, it underscores the need to distinguish between symbolic recognition and meaningful action, and between humanitarian rhetoric and policies that uphold human rights in practice.

The Palestinian cause has never lacked advocates or a compelling story. What it continues to confront is a political landscape in which power and strategic interests too often outweigh the very principles Western democracies claim to uphold.
