On Monday, EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, emphasized the urgent need for rapid and large-scale humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip. Speaking ahead of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, she warned:, “We need humanitarian aid to flood Gaza, not enter drop by drop, because the needs are immense and winter is coming.”
Lahbib recalled her recent visit to the Rafah crossing, noting that she was not allowed to enter Gaza, despite hundreds of trucks loaded with essential supplies waiting to pass through. She described the situation as overwhelming for humanitarian workers, many of whom were frustrated and exhausted due to the enormous administrative burden involved in delivering aid.
Her remarks highlight the critical urgency of scaling up assistance to prevent a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, especially as the winter season approaches. Lahbib’s statement calls on the international community and EU member states to streamline procedures and ensure aid reaches civilians swiftly and in sufficient volume, rather than piecemeal.
