On the Path of Iraq: Accountability for Corruption

By Taghreed Saadeh

What many people do not realize is that pro-Hamas elements, as well as actors from leftist backgrounds, are constantly working to form groups and organizations in the West that carry Palestinian names but are detached from established political factions. These groups issue statements opposing the Palestinian Authority, in an attempt to portray the entire Palestinian scene as uniformly aligned against it. They actively compete in distorting the image of the Palestinian Authority and in portraying anyone who supports it as marginalized or unacceptable.

At first, these matters may appear incidental. However, over time they have become more numerous and visible, and have gained influence because they were not confronted. It was assumed that these organizations operating under the guise of supporting the Palestinian cause or as political activist groups, could remain beyond scrutiny indefinitely, and that their intensified attacks on the Palestinian Authority, or statements suggesting that the Palestinian diaspora stands behind them, would go unchallenged.

These are ongoing attempts to exert pressure on the Authority. I believe it is time to confront such organizations that hijack the Palestinian position and present it as the sole legitimate national stance, without acknowledging that they may be serving the interests of one side at the expense of another. More importantly, they promote the narrative that everyone stands against a “corrupt and illegitimate Authority,” while portraying themselves as pure, corruption-free, and truly national.

The discourse has gradually narrowed to the point where only two categories seem to exist, traitor or patriot, without any scrutiny of these organizations or the scale of financial misconduct tied to funds collected in the name of the Palestinian cause.

Financial corruption within some of these organizations in the West is significant. It is now necessary to investigate anyone collecting money in the name of the Palestinian people and hold them accountable. The claim that others are corrupt has become an indirect way of presenting oneself as pure. Unfortunately, this narrative has been accepted by many without examining the fact that various leftist organizations and Hamas collect funds in the name of the Palestinian people, while it remains unclear where these funds go or what their total amounts are.

What is promoted by Israeli media, along with Al Jazeera, Hamas, the Popular Front, and all those opposing the Authority, is a constant discourse on the corruption of the Palestinian Authority. However, this is often presented without documents or evidence made available to the public. Even some leaders of opposing Palestinian factions appear on Al Jazeera calling for reform while accusing others of corruption, despite serious questions surrounding their own financial accounts and substantial sums of money. They rely on the aura they have built in public perception, as if the mere label of “resistance fighter” is enough to bypass any discussion of hidden financial misconduct. In this context, Al Jazeera relies on these figures in its opposition to the Authority and its support for Hamas.

Who says this situation will continue indefinitely? In Iraq, groups linked to Iran were arrested on charges of corruption and money laundering, despite having enjoyed protection since coming to power with American support and after contributing to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Similar developments may occur elsewhere, bringing an end to a long-inflated narrative that the mere support for Hamas grants someone the label of “resistance fighter” and exempts them from scrutiny, thereby preventing the exposure or accountability of real corruption cases.
